Alex & Mary have been working in clay since 1991. What began as a causal hobby gradually became a central point in their lives. Mary started taking classes in New Jersey and after their move to Michigan in 1991 Alex joined Mary in the clay program at The Kalamazoo Institute of Art. During their five years in Michigan they worked at improving their craft and began selling their work at local craft shows.
Since moving to North Carolina in 1995 they have been active in the Charlotte area potter's guild and work in their studio at their home in Denver, Lincoln County. Alex and Mary make functional and decorative work in stoneware, though one of them may occasionally stray into Porcelain or earthenware.
Hand made tiles are a focal point in Mary's work. She has built a catalog of her own designs and has done several custom installations.
Alex and Mary participate in the semi-annual Carolina ClayMatters Guild Pottery Sales, held in Charlotte the second Saturday in May and October and the Denver Art Trail, held the first Saturday in December. The Fat Cat Studio is also open by appointment.
